3. D. Slesinger and Stephenson in the encyclopedia of social science defines research as "the manipulation of things, concepts or symbols for the purpose of generalizing to extend, correct or verify knowledge, whether that knowledge and construction theory or in the practice of an art.

systematic search for getting information on a specific subject.

Pure or Basic Research
Research that is motivated by the desire to know or understand for the sake of knowing is called pure or basic research.
Applied Research
By the desire to know in order to use this knowledge for practical concerns is called applied research.
